Tip 1; Features and customization . Sofas are just like any consumer goods. In order to get the price down they have to eliminate something. It could be having a designers name on the product. But with upholstery it is more likely that they have eliminated the customization. By eliminating custom sizes, custom cushion cores, the ability to add a skirt or nail heads, you are purchasing a sofa as shown only so a lot of cost can be shaved off. This works if you are happy with the choice offered. The sofa may only be offered in certain fabrics that they buy in bulk. And there may be 100 just like it in the back.
Tip #2 Frame Construction. Just like buying a car, there is the skinned down version of basic transportation and then there is the Mercedes. Higher end quality sofa frames will be double doweled , screwed , glued and corner blocked , kiln dried wood. ( #CenturyFurniturecompany ) . To get the price down they make frames out of lots of other things including plywood and glue. Ask what the construction is. See if they have a diagram so you can make an educated decision.
Tip #3 Open up the cushions. A quality cushion core will have a nonwoven cover covering over the foam. As you climb the quality ladder your core may have down feathers on the top and bottom for comfort.
Tip #4 The springs. This has really changed over the years. The best construction I feel is an 8 way hand tied spring. It allows all of the springs to move independently for the most comfort. Manufacturers have gotten very clever with this. Again ask to see an illustration of the springs. A Zieser spring construction is the least expensive . It is a row of coils like your car seat.
Tip #5 Most fabric can be sent out to be treated against stains. But you can not let stains set up. They need to be cleaned as soon as possible. Ask for the manufacturers cleaning information. There are so many #Sunbrella and # Crypton fabrics available today that you should be able to find a fairly indestructible fabric to put on your sofa. Just make sure you spend enough on the frame . A pretty fabric on a broken frame is just not a good look. #yoursbydesign.net #sofashopping #howtobuyasofa
