What is juxtaposition ? As it relates to Interior Design is the placement of dissimilar objects next to each other. This room is a great example of this. The vintage Oriental screens were placed in front of modern pleated shades. Together they control the light coming into the room and create ambiance. The macramé beaded light fixture contrasts with the shine of the gold ceiling perfectly. Each element enhancing the other. A silver splattered cow hide rug is sitting on top of distressed wood floors and is contrasted again by the contemporary cocktail table.
Not your typical show house room is it? When I was asked to design a room for my 14th show house I thought I just am not up to it. I have so much work to do. But then I heard the rooms were to be budget minded and thought to myself now there is a challenge. So I decided to create a space for under $1,000.00 before sales tax. I shopped at Goodwill , thrift shops, garage sales and clearance houses. After the show house I donated every thing back to charity thrift stores that I had shopped from. Amazingly this little room ended up in a full page feature on garage sales in the Post Dispatch and was picked up by the AP press. It appeared in newspapers across the country.

Whether you are purchasing you first sofa or your 10th these 5 tips will help you et the best buy for your money.
Tip 1; Features and customization . Sofas are just like any consumer goods. In order to get the price down they have to eliminate something. It could be having a designers name on the product. But with upholstery it is more likely that they have eliminated the customization. By eliminating custom sizes, custom cushion cores, the ability to add a skirt or nail heads, you are purchasing a sofa as shown only so a lot of cost can be shaved off. This works if you are happy with the choice offered. The sofa may only be offered in certain fabrics that they buy in bulk. And there may be 100 just like it in the back.
Tip #2 Frame Construction. Just like buying a car, there is the skinned down version of basic transportation and then there is the Mercedes. Higher end quality sofa frames will be double doweled , screwed , glued and corner blocked , kiln dried wood. ( #CenturyFurniturecompany ) . To get the price down they make frames out of lots of other things including plywood and glue. Ask what the construction is. See if they have a diagram so you can make an educated decision.
Tip #3 Open up the cushions. A quality cushion core will have a nonwoven cover covering over the foam. As you climb the quality ladder your core may have down feathers on the top and bottom for comfort.
Tip #4 The springs. This has really changed over the years. The best construction I feel is an 8 way hand tied spring. It allows all of the springs to move independently for the most comfort. Manufacturers have gotten very clever with this. Again ask to see an illustration of the springs. A Zieser spring construction is the least expensive . It is a row of coils like your car seat.
Tip #5 Most fabric can be sent out to be treated against stains. But you can not let stains set up. They need to be cleaned as soon as possible. Ask for the manufacturers cleaning information. There are so many #Sunbrella and # Crypton fabrics available today that you should be able to find a fairly indestructible fabric to put on your sofa. Just make sure you spend enough on the frame . A pretty fabric on a broken frame is just not a good look. #yoursbydesign.net #sofashopping #howtobuyasofa

Shopping for new appliances can be a daunting task. So many choices to make. In this blog we are going to share some of the pros and cons of smooth cook tops.
The Number one feature of smooth cook tops is just that.... they are smooth and sleek giving your kitchen a more modern look. Also you can still use the counter top space when the burners are not engaged. Last the ease of clean up, spills can be wiped away. Little drips of sauces and crumbs can't fall down under the burner unit.
But there are cons to the smooth cook tops. They require special cleaning products. Some spills if baked on may not come off. And if abused the glass could scratch or break costing several hundred dollars to replace.
If you are considering purchasing new appliances try "going live". There are several live showrooms where you can actually cook on the products. Boil water , bake a sheet of cookies, or run dishes thru the dishwasher. While the current showrooms feature higher end products they are beneficial for any one who wants to test drive appliance's to help them narrow their selections. As always we are here to guide you when you need help with your Kitchen project.
